Brand new softcover book, 292 pages.

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow fur ball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barrelling, 44 kilogram steamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewellery. Obedience school did no good - Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, Don't hesitate to use these.

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behaviour, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms. The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life.

This is a book for everyone who has ever wanted, owned, or known a dog.

 Huge Book

Some 330 classic and original stories paying tribute to working dogs and written by Australia's people of the land - all in one volume.

Description

People of the bush regard their working dogs as the nation's greatest asset. Uncomplaining, tough, never needing to be fussed over, and hugely loyal, dogs rarely go on strike, don't hit the grog, only occasionally answer back, never ask for a pay rise, scarcely take a sickie and are always ready with infectious enthusiasm to start the day!

Drawn from around 2000 entries received by the ABC Country Hour in a nationwide competition, these stories in this classic title take you on a vast farm tour of the country, celebrating the remarkable abilities of working dogs and the pivotal role they play in rural Australia.

About Angela Goode and Mike Hayes
Angela Goode has written about rural issues ever since she was whisked away to the country in 1981. Formerly a news reporter and feature writer at The Advertiser, she began to write weekly articles about her new life on a cattle and sheep property as a way of keeping in touch with her city colleagues. She has written books in praise of working dogs, about the working horse era and people on the land. She rides, paints, travels frequently, studies the endangered bush stone curlews on her farm and rejoices when they breed. Country and city differences, rural politics and lessons from the natural world continue to fascinate her. RRP $32

Dogwise: The Natural Way to Train Your Dog (Paperback)

By John Fisher

Dogwise is an amazingly practical guide to training. It gives an insight to dog psyche and is very easy to follow. Training a dog a command takes no more than fifteen minutes, that's my own personal practical and successful experience. You can also help your dog learn other commands based on the same techniques given here, you'll become innovative. The illustrations are great but the number of photographs should have been more. Whatever dogwise is a book that can turn your dog from scratch to a complete police dog in no more than three months. Take my word for it! I strongly recommend dog lovers to give it a try; they and their dogs will both be happy and better off.  Read Once as new condition.

Promis of the Wolves

There are only three rules a wolf must adhere to: never consort with humans, never kill a human unprovoked and never allow a mixed-blood wolf to live. Breaking any of these rules will threaten the very survival of the species-and perhaps mankind.

The wolves of the Wilde Valley have rules about the humans who share their territory. Wolves are not to consort with humans, and must stay away from their dwellings. Under no circumstances may a wolf hunt with a human. Any wolf who defies these rules will be exiled from the Valley. But what the Wilde Valley wolves don't know is that, long ago, the fates of the two nations were irrevocably intertwined when ancient wolves agreed to be the guardian of the human race. The wolves pledged to make sure that humans remember they are just one part of the greatest Balance of nature. But the wolves of the Wilde Valley have forgotten their promise... and if they don't reconnect with the humans soon, all the creatures in the valley will suffer the consequences.

Inspired by the scientific theory of co-evolution, Hearst uses the idea that wolves, and later dogs, made humans the dominant species on the planet by teaching them how to hunt cooperatively, hold territories and from complex societies. Of course, these are the very strengths that have allowed humans to be good survivors, but have also led them to destroy the environment they rely on for survival.

Set 40,000 years ago in the land that is now southern Europe, Promise of the Wolves, the first installment in a trilogy, follows the life of Kaala, a young she-wolf who discovers that she is destined to bring the two clans back together. Kaala's story is told in parallel with the legends of Lydda, the ancient wolf who brought humans and wolves together for the first time, with dire results.

Brilliantly weaving together original research, unforgettable characters and dynamic, thoroughly engaging plot, Promise of the Wolves is an adventure story in the tradition of Clan of the Cave Bear and Watership Down.

Dorothy Hearst: spent extensive time in Yellowstone observing wolves in the wild. She has toured the 16,000 year old cave paintings at Les Eyzies, as well as a lesser known cave in the Dordogne Valley, which boasts what may be the oldest representation of a wolf carved into the cave wall. Promise of the Wolves, the first in The Wolf Chronicles trilogy is her first novel.
